My brother, Camden, from CNB Photos, took this photo, and since the song is called “Need Your Art,” I felt that this image was a fitting choice for the cover. It has an artsy vibe that complements the song perfectly. This track is one of those moments of self-reflection where I hold myself accountable to stay active and creative, even when motivation is lacking. There’s nothing wrong with taking a break to recharge, especially as I get older, but it’s important to remember that there’s work to be done. I just returned from Atlanta, where I attended the National Association of Black Storytellers, and I left the trip feeling very inspired. Jim Embry would say to me, “There is work to be done,” and those words resonated with me. They made me reflect on our summer academy, The Norman Jordan African American Arts and Heritage Academy, which I am deeply involved with, as well as 6’6 240. I wrote the song from my own perspective of talking to myself, but it also serves as a call to all my creative family and friends. It’s a reminder that it’s our duty to share our art during times like these.
